Heavenly Curry Mee

This is one of my favourite hawker's food...it can be found at most of the popular hawker centre in town. This picture was taken at New World Park. The seller has been in business for many many years. She used to operate from a stall at Swatow Lane when New World Park was not built yet.  Her curry mee is well known for being very aromatic while her curry soup is thick and creamy.

Give it a try when you are New World Park...you might come back for more.

The stinky beans, Sambal Udang Petai.

This is definitely my favourite dish of all time, regardless of what other people says.  Pity those who I have to talk to after a heavy dosage of this beans. The strong pungent smell can last in your breath for quite some time.  Best cooked with prawn sambal....

Let's get close to nature....

Spending my day off close to nature....

G-Shock Riseman Icarus....Limited Edition

One of my prize collection....

Ang Hea aka Red Prawn....

Durian season is happening now and almost everyone in the country knows where to get the best...where else but Balik Pulau, Penang.

The pictures above are Ang Hea, my favorite "brand" eventhough there are many out there which have won numerous awards locally and internationally. Some of the popular "brands" are raja kunyit, d24, d14, hor lor, little red, khong poh, capiri and 604.  Some of these are so popular and so in demand that they can even fetch exorbitant prices, up to nearly RM50 per kilo.

I like ang hea because its sweet with a slightly bitter ending taste.  The name ang hea means Red Prawn as the flesh looks like a cooked red prawn.  Ang Hea usually goes at RM10 to RM15 per kilo, cheaper during end of the season like now.

Go and grab one before the season is over. Durian season in Penang is usually from mid June until end of July.

Expect durians to cost more next year as we are going to export our award winning durians to China...

Hokkien Mee aka Prawn Noodles...

Penang is well known for hokkien mee or more commonly known across the country as Prawn Mee. There are plenty of stalls scattered around the state selling pretty good hokkien mee which are popular with foodies.

Recently I stumbled upon a coffee shop or it seems more like an old house converted partially into a coffee shop selling this popular noodles. It is located at Jalan CY Choy, the road that leads to town where it crosses Jalan Magazine. Unfortunately the shop has no name but it has a banner announcing that the original Hokkien Mee is available here which makes locating the shop much easier. It is only available from early morning to around 1pm.

The hokkien mee here is quite good and they sell Loh Mee too. Some have commented that the broth is too sweet but taste of it is on par with most of the popular ones. Go ahead and explore it!

Fish Head Curry....

Fish head curry has been one of my favorite dish for many years...I am constantly searching for a good fish head curry wherever I go. Recently I found a kopitiam somewhere in Island Park that served a lipsmacking good fish head curry. The curry is thick and very tasty and fresh fish head is always being used...very important when it comes to curry. The kopitiam is called Good Corner and the stall is located at the end of the kopitiam. It is situated opposite Japanese Garden in Island Park.

This fish head curry is on top of my list at this moment...give it try, I am pretty sure you will like it.

A large bowl of Fish Head Curry for 2 is at RM18 to RM 20...they have other dishes too if you want some side dishes to go with your rice. The kangkung belacan is worth trying.

Ayam Masak Kicap Madu

Finally found the best Ayam Masak Kicap Madu in town...
I have been scouting around for the best Ayam Kicap for a while and sometime last month I found the perfect one (for me anyway...you don't have to agree).  The Ayam Kicap Madu served here is tender, sweet and full of flavour...simply lipsmacking, tonguewagging and salivadrooling good!  Hey mamak!! I will be back for more....if my cholesterol level permits it. :)

Venue:  Restoran Nasi Kandar Makbool in Bayan Baru.

Mee Rebus Ramli @ Ipoh, Perak....

Mee Rebus Ramli in Ipoh... the best in Ipoh as claimed by the locals.  I found it pretty good, the broth was very tasty and thick unlike the mamak version here in Penang which can be a bit diluted or watery.  Certainly worth trying if you are in Ipoh.

Fish and Chips at Hotel Penaga, Penang...

Price: RM 25.00 ++ per person (3-course Set Lunch)
Available during weekdays only.
Venue: Cinnamon Restaurant

Cream of Leek Soup
English Battered Fish and Chips
Fresh Fruits

Main course was pretty ordinary and the presentation was pretty good. Soup was average.  The coffee house is beautifully set-up with a hint of English influence which overlooked a lap pool and a beautiful landscaped garden.

Give it a try before the promotion ends.

A simple "Maggi Mee Goreng" at its best....

Now who don't know Maggi Mee in Malaysia....it is probably the best known brand of instant noodle here.  Maggi Mee has been our staple food for many many years and yet we don't actually get bored with it.  It's quick, easy to cook and cheap and yes easily available too.
Almost all mamak shops in Penang sell Maggi Mee Goreng but there is just one particular shop located at Jalan Khoo Sian Ewe called Restoran Yunus Khan that served the most outstanding Maggi Mee Goreng I have ever tasted.  The mee is pretty simple and not much presentation to drool over (as shown in the picture) but the taste is simply out of this world.  It is just amazing such a simple dish can be so good.  I always order a double (2 packets la, 1 where got enough) with a fried egg and some diced chicken on top.  Some diners said the Maggi Tomyam Goreng is very good too but I have never try one before simply because I don't fancy Tomyam.

The place is well known for its night crowd....Some refer this place as "Bird Shit Maggi Goreng" and some called it "Jiao Sai Maggi Goreng".  Reason is because it is located near a few huge trees that crows have made their home.  Its pretty noisy in the evening when these birds fly back to rest and you can expect a lot of birds' droppings during that time.

But don't let these disgusting names and condition deter you for patronizing this place because like the title says, this is where you can find a simple Maggi Goreng at its best...

(Warning : The above article may not be totally true due to the fact that the writer has been a Maggi Mee Goreng addict for many many years.....)

And I don't work for Maggi ok!....

Me and my Chicken Rice again...

Here I go again ranting about chicken rice...next stop is an old Chinese restaurant called "Tho Yuen" located at Campbell Street, Penang.  Tho Yuen is really old, it has been in existence for nearly 5 decades. This restaurant is famous for its "Dim Sum" and also its Handmade Egg Tart.  I found both of the mentioned items mediocre, to me the highlight of the restaurant is its Steamed Chicken Rice.  White luscious chicken steamed to perfection.  One of the best steamed chicken I have ever tasted...I ordered Fried Shang Mee for 2 and some "Kuk Poh" Chinese Tea to go along with my Chicken Rice (Drumstick).  All these for RM 17.40....definitely a lot more cheaper than Tua Pui Loh (Nagore Road) RM 9.00 Chicken Rice la...

Be prepare to wait...it gets pretty crowded during lunch and jam-packed during holidays.

From Singapore to Penang...Singeylang Special

I know a lot of people who don't like the idea of Frog being a meal but the chinese has been eating frogs for many many years but then the chinese has been known to be eating a lot of other animals for many many years as well. Frogs (not talking about those you found in your garden ya) Bull Frogs to be precise are said to be rich in nutrient and are high in protein (don't ask me where these facts are from...I googled it ok).

Now back to Singeylang Claypot Frog Porridge Restaurant, the outlet used to be at Macalister Road but has since moved to 8th Row (known as Krian Road, off Macalister Road) a few years ago. They served other stuffs too besides frogs such as fish dishes, stirfried vegetables, eggs and etc.  Of course most of the diners will ordered the restaurant's specialty which can be cooked in several styles.  I personally love their "Kung Po" Frogs which obviously served in a claypot la (what else la).  Since I don't fancy porridge, I got myself some Kangkung Belacan, Scrambled Egg with Salted Raddish and French Beans with Minced Pork to go with my rice. (I was very hungry ok...)

According to the owner, Singeylang in Singapore is very popular for their Claypot Frog Porridge, hence the name....I would rate the place as above average as all the dishes were pretty good and value for money too and yes the frogs were cooked to perfection too, soft and juicy. Come to think of it, it tasted like scallop...

German Pork Knuckles at Straits Quay, Penang...Köstlich!

Weissbrau German Bar and Bistro - RM 48.00
Served with Mixed Garden Vegetables and Mashed Potatoes.
Verdict: Small portion and dry.  The meat and the skin were pretty tough and dry too.  Extensive menu to choose from.

Berlin's Bier Houz - RM 25.00
Served with Black Pepper Sauce and White Raddish
Verdict: Huge serving, the meat was tender and juicy and the skin was pretty crispy.
Yes...its cheaper too. Try some Timmerman's Fruit Beer when you are there...simply refreshing. Limited menu choices.

Fatty Loh Chicken Rice...Really?

I am gonna talk about chicken rice again...Penangites just love their chicken rice.

Topic for today: The Original Fatty Loh Chicken Rice

Fatty Loh Chicken Rice at Nagore Road has claimed to be the original "Fatty Loh Chicken Rice" in Penang but then there's another Fatty Loh at Fettes Park that claimed to be the original too....but seriously who cares which one is the original as long as they serve good chicken rice rite?.  Now back to the one at Nagore Road...I have stopped visiting Fatty Loh for quite some time now, not because they are not good, its just because there are a few better ones out there and they have made Fatty Loh looks/tastes pretty ordinary.

I have decided to patronise Fatty Loh @ Nagore Road  a few days ago simply because I was at Nagore Road during dinner time and I was looking for something simple and quick. I ordered roast chicken (drumstick) with sauteed taugeh. The chicken and rice were pretty good but ordinary but what surprised me was when I decided to pay for my dinner.....

I have just paid RM 14.00 for a so called quick and simple dinner.  The drumstick was charged at RM 8.00 and they charged you the rice seperately....RM 1.00 for a bowl of rice.  Seriously...I thought I ordered a chicken rice and not a chicken and rice...well next was RM 3.50 for a plate of taugeh with lots of pepper sprinkled on top and RM 1.50 for a glass of herbal tea.  Usually when it comes to food, I am not stingy, I eat out a lot....but seriously RM 9.00 for a plate of chicken rice??

No wonder I was the only one there...I guess there are a lot smarter chicken rice eaters out there.  Normally a plate of chicken rice around town will costs you around RM 4.50 only.

I understand that they are housed in a nice colonial building but I have seen nicer looking coffee shops that sell chicken rice for half the price I was paying and they are pretty good too.

Anyway I guess some hard core Fatty Loh's supporters might not agreed with me but personally I will not be visiting any Fatty Lohs (irregardless whether they are original or not) for a long long time...Let me just stick to Fatty Boy Chicken Rice for now.

The RM 8.00 Drumstick!

Fatty Boy Chicken Rice

I am sure all of us Penangites have heard of Fatty Loh Chicken Rice rite?? But have u heard of Fatty Boy Chicken Rice?? Huh?? What?? Got meh??

Yup...the coffee shop where Fatty Boy operates from is called Kafe 98 and it is located next to Tune Hotel at Burmah Road.

According to his regulars "Fatty Boy" used to work under Fatty Loh years ago as an apprentice and ventured out a few years later after mastering the skills of preparing good chicken rice.

I have been patronising this outlet quite regularly as my office is located within the vicinity and I personally think that his chicken rice is way much better than Fatty Loh.  Like normal chicken rice stall, he also sells roast pork, bbq pork, some roast duck and Belancan Fried Chicken. He has some side dishes too - Beancurd with Boiled Egg in Soya Sauce, the usual Vinegar Pork Leg and the evergreen "Chai Boey".

He is assisted by his wife (a petite thai lady) and his sister (they called her "Fatty Sis") and can be very busy during lunch time.  Besides the good chicken rice they served, their service is also flawless. Fast and efficient indeed...

Give it a go when you are at Burmah Road, I am sure you will agree with me...
